Skin cancer occurs when there is is damage to skin cells from overexposure to UV from the sun. The sooner a skin cancer is looked at and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or complex treatments, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancers. Many of us will develop moles on our bodies but its important to know when ones are more serious.
Signs that may suggest skin cancers are:
- Any crusty, non-healing sores
- Small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour
- New spots, freckles, any moles (nevus) or other skin lesion changing in colour, thickness or shape over a period of weeks to months
